Press Reviews - Alexia Voulgaridou - Soprano
Pietro MASCAGNI, Cavalleria Rusticana, DYNAMIC Blu-ray

Voulgaridou has the full measure of Santuzza’s musical and dramatic challenges. The voice has depth and beauty, but also a cutting edge that makes a telling impact in the moments when Santuzza is at her most desperate. Voulgaridou is a compelling stage presence, one who embodies the beautiful young jilted lover in totally convincing fashion. A welcome addition to the crowded field. Recommended.

But of course Santuzza has the larger role and in this production soprano Alexia Voulgaridou is also hugely convincing. Try her heartrending Voi lo sapete wherein her dramatic skills also shine through. In the latter realm she’s quite a virtuoso, actually: how does she summon those apparently very real tears in her encounter with Turiddu? A hidden onion?

Soprano Alexia Voulgaridou portrays a perfect, melancholic Santuzza. She possesses an excellent vocal instrument and her voice is lyrical, dramatic and emotionally engaging.
